SARI / STATEMENT @ Wereldmuseum Amsterdam
For those who are members of the el.résidu newsletter, know that a new exhibition has opened in the Wereldmuseum Amsterdam from April 12, '24: SARI/STATEMENT.
A sari is an age-old garment that is still widely worn to this day by women in India, Nepal and Pakistan, among others.
A sari usually consists of 4-8 meters of fabric that is wrapped around the body. Often made of silk, but later there were also cotton variants, ''fake silk'' (which consists of a viscose blend) and polyester. Not only do Saris have the most beautiful colors, they also have the most beautiful prints and embroidery, often with special symbolism that stands for happiness, abundance and strength.
The exhibition provides an overview of the diversity of the Sari. The garment can be worn as a statement, resistance, celebration or simply as a striking fashion item. History is so diverse and has so many different expressions that it is fascinating to see all the variations during this exhibition.
In addition to this special exhibition, it is certainly worthwhile to take a look at the Museum Shop of the Wereldmuseum. I think this is one of the most extensive museum shops I know with the most beautiful items.
And the best part is, during the duration of the SARI / STATEMENT exhibition, el.résidu will be sold in the shop!
The exhibition can be visited until November 3, 2024.
