6 tips for a sustainable wardrobe

6 tips voor een duurzame garderobe

''Yes, but I don't always want to look the same'' or ''Yes, but sustainable clothing is so expensive'' or ''Sustainable clothing is too basic and boring for me''

These are some quotes I frequently hear when I talk about sustainable clothing. Let me prove that you can make a big difference with these simple tips without compromising your unique style.

1. Is your closet full of fast fashion items? It's ok, I'm not here to judge. I still have several items from ZARA and H&M in my closet. What you can do, however, is make sure you keep wearing these items for a long time! Don't throw them away after one season, but wear them for as long as possible to somewhat compensate.

2. Be creative! Look for new ways to style your clothes. I'm sure you can come up with new combinations or a different way of wearing them by tying or folding a blouse. Challenge yourself and try to find at least 2 new ways to style the items in your closet. Check out @el.residu on Instagram and Tiktok for styling tips and inspiration!

3. A sustainable wardrobe doesn't necessarily mean it can only consist of a maximum number of items and must only come from sustainable brands. If you, as a true fashion lover, like to have a large wardrobe, make sure your closet consists of a mix of old and new. Buy second-hand and vintage clothing more often. Swap items with friends or at a swap shop, rent a special item instead of buying it when you know you'll only wear it once for a party. Additionally, you can supplement your closet with beautiful basics or unique and more expressive items of rich and sustainable qualities that will last a long time.

4. If you take a moment and do some calculations, you'll see that sustainable clothing isn't necessarily more expensive. The purchase price might be higher than that of a fast fashion brand, but the quality is better, and therefore you will enjoy it longer. So, delve into the qualities of clothing and learn how to best treat them and what their pros and cons are, so you can make more conscious choices when shopping from now on.

5. If you're truly tired of a certain item, it has holes, or your body has changed and it no longer fits, you can of course try to sell the items through a platform like Vinted. But what if you come up with a more creative solution and make something new out of it, or have it made? With a few small adjustments and a creative afternoon at the sewing machine, you might just have made a fun and new item? There are plenty of sewing courses available nowadays. Or, if you're really all thumbs, visit a tailor and ask if they can help you.

6. An item with stains and discolorations? Why not dye them? There are enough options on the market to breathe new life into your item with a new color or print. Did you know you can also print with, for example, onion skins, flowers, and herbs? Make sure you're signed up for the newsletter to stay informed about upcoming eco dye workshops!
